How To Store Your Hunting Gear in the Off-Season

Whether it’s due to seasonal hunting regulations, personal preference, or because the weather becomes too harsh for hunting, every hunter inevitably faces the occasional off-season when they don’t need their gear as frequently, or at all.

But just because you’re not actively using your hunting gear doesn’t mean you should toss it in a corner and neglect it. Properly storing your hunting gear during the off-season will help keep it in good condition and ready for when you need it again. Here are some tips on how to store your hunting gear in the off-season.

Clean and Store Your Guns

Before you store your guns, give them a thorough cleaning. This removes any dirt, moisture, or residue that could cause rust or damage. Once clean, apply a light coat of oil to the metal parts to prevent rust.

Next, you need to decide where to store your guns. Store them in a dry, cool place with low humidity to prevent rust and corrosion. Keep them locked up in a safe or cabinet, away from any potential hazards like heat sources or moisture. If you have a large collection of guns, you may want to consider installing a floor safe in your home, which will allow you to store all your guns in the same secure location.

Care for Your Bows and Crossbows

Bows and crossbows require a bit of extra care to maintain their integrity. Start by loosening the tension on the strings to relieve stress on the limbs. Check for any signs of wear or damage and address them as needed. Store your bows and crossbows in a vertical position, ideally in a case or on a rack designed for them. Keep them in a cool, dry place to prevent any warping or weakening of the materials.

Preserve Your Optics

Binoculars, scopes, and rangefinders are delicate pieces of equipment that need careful handling. Clean the lenses with a microfiber cloth and lens cleaner designed for optics. Avoid touching the lenses with your fingers to prevent smudges or scratches. Store your optics in their original cases or padded bags to protect them from dust and impact. Keep them in a dry location to avoid any moisture build-up that could affect the clarity of the lenses.

Maintain Your Hunting Clothing

Your hunting clothing can take a beating during the season, so give it a good wash. Use scent-free detergent and avoid fabric softener, which can leave residue that could alert game to your presence. Inspect each garment for any tears or holes and repair them before storing. For optimal preservation, hang your clothing in a cool, dry closet with plenty of airflow.

Check Your Footwear

Give your hunting boots some attention before storing them for the season. Clean off any dirt or debris and let the boots air dry fully. Apply leather conditioner to prevent them from drying out and cracking if needed. For rubber boots, make sure they’re completely clean and dry before stacking them in storage.

Storing your hunting gear properly in the off-season is straightforward if you follow these steps. By taking the time to clean, organize, and store your items correctly, you’ll extend their lifespan and improve your readiness for next season. This way, you can spend less time wondering, “Where did I put that?” and “Is this still usable?” and more time outdoors experiencing the thrill of the hunt.
