X-BULL Gen 3.0 Off-Road Recovery Traction Boards

I frequently kayak fish down Matagorda beach, on the Texas Gulf Coast. This barrier island is largely undeveloped except for a few houses south of the small town of Matagorda. Matagorda beach is not maintained like Mustang (Port A) or Padre are. It is “four wheel drive only” and the local spectator sport is watching vehicles get stuck. Seriously, you can sometimes see three or four vehicles all stuck at the same time near the torn-up entrance.

Matagorda is not for the faint of heart. This is just typical conditions.

There are many different traction recovery boards on the market. After careful consideration, I decided upon the X-BULL Gen 3. They hit the sweet spot of performance, reliability, and price.

Constructed from reinforced, UV-stabilized nylon, the X-BULL Gen 3 boards are designed to withstand harsh conditions. Each board measures approximately 42 x 12 inches and weighs 11.2 lbs per pair, making them manageable for anyone . The boards feature an aggressive pattern for maximum grip. Note, It is important not to “spin” your tires on the boards as this can rip off the teeth.

Unfortunately (I guess!), I did not get stuck so the boards were not pressed into service. I did test how well they work as a shovel to dig out sand in front of the tire. They worked great on the super-soft sand. I would still recommend carrying a real shovel if driving in harsher conditions.

Driving solo down the beach and into the back-side kayak launch spots can be a bit dicey. It was comforting knowing that I had a quality shovel and the X-BULL Gen 3.0 off-road recovery traction boards in the bed of the truck.

The kit includes a carrying bag and mounting pins.

I would definetly recommend carrying a set if you venture very far off of pavement.
