I grew up on the gulf coast, my parents owned a boat dealership near Corpus Christi and we spent all of our time hunting and fishing. My dad loved saltwater fishing and we fished the bays and went offshore every chance we could get!
I have recently become aware of the challenges facing the sport fisherman who like to go after Snapper. My understanding is they have shortened the season on sport fisherman and it appears that regulations are being driven by the commercial fisherman. Don’t get me wrong, I love being able to order fresh fish in a restaurant or buy it to cook myself, but the sport fisherman’s concerns need to be taken into consideration as well.
Back in the 70s, illegal gill netting on the coast was becoming a big problem. Our father, Glen Coker fought against the commercial fisherman’s illegal activities and over fishing.
I probably won’t get death threats like he did over posting this but it’s my little part to make sure you are aware of the situation.
What can you do?
If you go fishing for Snapper you need to make sure the sport fisherman’s counts are being factored into the decision making process by filling out this simple form..
